‘CUBA BAILA!’ premiered at the Sydney Opera House, Monday March 9th, 2009.
“The Cuban flavour was imparted by the half-hour warmup act, ‘Cuba Baila!’, comprising dancers Yarima Gavilan, Fraudy Martin Estrada Megret, Adrian Medina Scull and Sergio Sieres, who encultured us with folkloric orishas (if I have it right), literally meaning deities: dance homages to the gods. There was also son, a style of music that harks back to the 20s, at least; one familiar to the ears of BVSC fans, whether they know it, or not. Then, rumba; the real deal, of which there are numerous styles. Finally, street salsa; so much more energised and impassioned than your local, suburban class. It was a colourful, charged, even electric opener; one was transported to downtown Havana. ” - Lloyd Bradford (brad) Syke, AUSTRALIAN STAGE ON-LINE
“The night started off with a potted history of dance from the Caribbean island, Cuba Baila!, with Sydney-based dancers Yarima Gavilan, Fraudy Martin Estrada Megret, Adrian Medina Scull and Sergio Sieres.
They set the stage, and the audience, alight with their rumbas and salsas in what must one of the best ice-breaking acts Sydney has seen for a long time. ” -by Steve Moffatt, THE MANLY DAILY
”Setting the scene before this outstanding concert was the colour and humour of the racy dance troupe Cuba Baila” - John Shand, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
